Reminder: MGSD schools and offices will be closed Monday, January 19

Posted Date: 01/15/26 (10:00 AM)

Hello MGSD community!

As a reminder, all MGSD school buildings and administrative offices will be closed this Monday, January 19, in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Since MLK Day is often called a "day on, not a day off," here are some ideas to give back and build community this weekend!

Ways to Give Back (Volunteer Ideas):

🔹 Support FeedNC and/or the Mooresville Christian Mission. Drop off non-perishable food items or check their website for specific volunteer shifts.

🔹 Assemble "Kindness Kits" - Fill small bags with socks, snacks, and bottled water to keep in the car and give to those in need.

🔹 Letters of Gratitude - Spend 30 minutes as a family writing "Thank You" cards to local healthcare workers, firefighters/leos, or elderly neighbors.

🔹 Community Cleanup - Grab some gloves and a trash bag for a quick 20-minute "sweep" of a local park or your own neighborhood street.

At-Home Activities for Kids:

🔹 "I Have a Dream" Jar - Have children write down their dreams for their community or the world on slips of paper and put them in a decorated jar.

🔹 Peace Dove Crafts - Use paper plates or cardstock to create doves, writing one way they can show kindness to others on the wings.

🔹 Story Time - Visit the library to check out books like "Martin's Big Words" by Doreen Rappaport or "Be a King: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dream and You" by Carole Boston Weatherford.

🔹 Watch the Speech - Watch a clip of the "I Have a Dream" speech together and ask your kids what parts stood out to them the most.

We wish everyone a nice Monday off and look forward to seeing you back on Tuesday, January 20!
